What is a multi-shot mold (2K/3K/4K)?

Multi-shot molding injects 2–4 colors or materials in sequence within a single mold and one automated cycle, forming a multi-color lamp lens in one operation. “K” stands for the German Komponenten (components). 2K is two colors, 3K three, 4K four. A rotary platen or index system moves the first-shot part to the next station to bond the new color — no secondary assembly needed.

Why do lamp lenses need multi-shot molding?

Because modern lamp lenses often have multiple color zones on one piece (brake red, turn-signal amber, clear areas), multi-shot molding completes them in one step — with better fit and optical consistency than separate assembly.

No assembly: one-shot forming removes the secondary bonding/clipping step

Better seal: colors bond inside the mold, tighter than post-assembly joints, less prone to water ingress

Key technical challenges of multi-shot lamp molds

The most failure-prone areas of a multi-shot mold are the color-to-color bonding face (shut-off) and shrinkage matching across shots.Howmin uses Moldex3D flow analysis to predict filling, warpage and bonding before cutting steel, and five-axis machining plus optical polishing to ensure shut-off quality.

Each added shot demands not only more precision, but an independent mechanism for every station — all coordinated so that when any station rotates or injects, it does not interfere with the mechanisms working at other stations.


Multi-shot lamp molds are often assumed to be “hard because of precision,” but the real challenge is mechanism design. From 2K to 3K to 4K, each added shot means another slide, ejector or core-pull mechanism operating inside the same mold. Driven by the rotary platen, these mechanisms act simultaneously; if any one’s stroke, timing or spatial layout is off, it will collide with or interfere with an adjacent station’s mechanism.

So the core difficulty of a 4K four-shot mold is integrating four independent mechanisms into one synchronized, non-clashing system — planning every station’s timing and spatial interference at the design stage, rather than discovering a jam during trial.
